Safety and classification

Carbon monoxide falls into the category of toxic and flammable gases. Exposure to this gas over a long period of time, even at low concentrations, can lead to complications such as dizziness, loss of consciousness and even death.

Breathing this gas in moderate concentrations causes headache, drowsiness, dizziness, irritability, excessive salivation, nausea and vomiting.

Carbon monoxide in combination with air creates a flammable mixture, so prevent any leak . and store cylinders in a well-ventilated area and temperatures under 52°C. avoid any flames and heat sources around the cylinders.

Compatibility

This gas is stable under normal conditions, but in the presence of substances such as a combination of metals and moisture, sulfur-containing compounds, oxidizing agents, etc., it is incompatible. The gas decomposes at temperatures above 400° C and produces carbon dioxide and carbon.

The most common carbon monoxide production plants are “reformers” in which natural gas and steam react to produce CO and hydrogen.

Another industrial source of carbon monoxide is producer gas, a mixture containing mostly carbon monoxide and nitrogen, formed by combustion of carbon in air at high temperature.

A third industrial source is “water gas”, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide produced via the endothermic reaction of steam and carbon.

There are also many other production techniques such as incomplete combustion of natural gas and, for smaller quantities, the dehydration of formic acid using either sulfuric or phosphoric acid.

Applications

  • Carbon monoxide is largely used in the chemical industry to yield a wide variety of chemicals such as esters, ketones, aldehydes and glycols as well as phosgene, an important chemical intermediate.
  • Carbon monoxide is used in large quantities in the primary metals industry in many different ways, e.g. as a chemical reducing agent for the recovery of metals from ores or in the purification of aluminium waste , … .
  • Methanol is produced by the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide.
  • Acetic acid is industrially produced in a catalytic reaction of carbon monoxide and methanol.
  • Carbon monoxide is a component in laser gas mixtures.
  • Carbon monoxide is a component in calibration gasmixtures.
